Recognizing Yale’s special obligations to its home community, the Humanities Program has launched a new summer program for aspiring college students from New Haven’s public schools. Titled “Citizens Thinkers Writers: Reflecting on Civic Life,” the two-week residential program offers a chance for rising seniors in the New Haven Public Schools to experience a small discussion seminar with Yale faculty, close reading of rewarding texts, and intense investigation of fundamental questions. Students will consider history, literature and philosophy from ancient Greece to modern New Haven, and will learn to link their own lives in our city with enduring questions about the human condition. Yale undergraduates will serve as residential teaching assistants, offering mentorship and college application advice during the summer and the following academic year. The program is tuition-free and aims especially at students who would be the first in their immediate family to attend college.
